Square Inductive Proximity Sensor – 15mm, 5mm Detection

This Square Inductive Proximity Sensor is a replacement electronic position sensor for compatible laser engraving and cutting machines and industrial equipment. It detects nearby metal objects without requiring direct mechanical contact.

The sensor features a compact blue housing, a 15mm square sensing face, and an attached three-wire cable. Its inductive sensing design makes it useful for compatible machine positioning, movement detection, and automated control applications.

The sensor is specified with a nominal 5mm sensing distance, a 10–30VDC operating range, and an NPN open-collector output. A red detection indicator provides visual feedback when the sensor detects a suitable target.

Important: Proximity sensors with similar housings may have different output configurations, sensing distances, and wiring arrangements. Verify compatibility with your existing sensor and machine controller before ordering.

How the Inductive Proximity Sensor Works

Unlike a mechanical limit switch, an inductive proximity sensor does not need to be pressed or physically contacted to detect a target.

The sensor generates an electromagnetic field near its sensing face. When a suitable metal object enters this field, the sensor detects the change and switches its electrical output.

The machine controller can use this output to identify the presence or position of a metal target. In a properly configured system, proximity sensors may be used for position detection, movement monitoring, and machine automation.

The specified 5mm sensing distance is nominal. Actual detection distance can vary depending on the target's metal composition, dimensions, orientation, and mounting conditions.

Ferrous metals, such as steel, are commonly used as detection targets. Other metals may be detected at reduced distances depending on their properties and the sensor's specifications.

Understanding the NPN Output

This sensor uses an NPN open-collector output to communicate with compatible electronic controls.

In an NPN switching arrangement, the output transistor provides a path toward DC ground when activated. A compatible controller input detects this change as a switching signal.

This differs from a PNP sensor, which typically switches positive supply voltage to its output.

Important: NPN and PNP proximity sensors are not automatically interchangeable. The machine controller must support the sensor's output configuration and operating voltage.

The normally open or normally closed switching behavior must also match the original component. These characteristics should be confirmed before installation.

Three-Wire Connection

The existing product specifications identify the following wiring arrangement:

  • Brown: Positive DC power supply
  • Blue: DC ground or 0V
  • Black: Sensor switching output

These colors follow a common industrial three-wire sensor convention. However, wiring should always be confirmed against the markings or documentation for the actual sensor before electrical connections are made.

Do not connect this sensor directly to an AC power source or a control circuit that exceeds its specified DC operating range.

Compatibility

This proximity sensor is intended for laser machines and industrial equipment that require a matching square inductive sensor with a 5mm nominal sensing distance and NPN open-collector output.

Before ordering, compare the following with your existing sensor:

  • Sensor body shape and mounting dimensions
  • 15mm square sensing face and orientation
  • Nominal sensing distance
  • Operating voltage range
  • NPN versus PNP output type
  • Normally open or normally closed switching behavior
  • Three-wire electrical configuration
  • Cable length and routing requirements
  • Required sensing direction and surrounding metal clearance

Important: Sensors that look nearly identical may use different electrical outputs, sensing distances, or switching characteristics. Physical similarity does not guarantee a compatible replacement.

The original listing references several comparable sensor families. These should be treated as identification references only, not confirmed direct replacements. Always verify the complete specifications before substituting a different model.

Installation & Safety

  • Disconnect electrical power to the laser machine before inspecting, removing, or replacing the sensor.
  • Document the original sensor's position, orientation, and wiring connections before removal.
  • Verify the replacement sensor's voltage and output requirements against the machine's control system.
  • Secure the sensor in the correct mounting position without damaging its housing.
  • Maintain the required sensing distance and clearance around the sensing face.
  • Route the attached cable away from moving components, sharp edges, and potential pinch points.
  • Confirm the positive supply, ground, and signal connections before restoring power.
  • Verify that the detection indicator and controller input respond correctly to the intended metal target.
  • Test the machine's positioning or sensing function according to its operating instructions before returning it to normal use.

Safety Note: Incorrect sensor wiring or positioning can cause unreliable detection, controller faults, or unexpected machine movement. Do not bypass safety circuits or substitute a standard proximity sensor for a safety-rated device without an approved design.

If the replacement sensor does not resolve the problem, inspect the power supply, wiring, mounting position, target material, and controller input configuration before continuing operation.
