SMD-MB450A Bipolar Stepper Motor Driver
The Sumtor Elec MB450A is a bipolar microstep stepper motor driver designed to control compatible two-phase stepper motors in CO2 laser engraving and cutting machines, CNC equipment, and other motion-control systems.
Operating on 18–50V DC power, this driver converts pulse and direction signals from a machine controller into controlled motor movement. Adjustable current and microstepping settings allow it to be configured for compatible motors, helping maintain smooth axis movement and accurate positioning.
Key Features
- Adjustable Motor Current: Eight selectable output current settings ranging from 0.71A to 3.00A RMS, or 1.00A to 4.20A peak.
- Microstepping Control: Fifteen selectable pulse-per-revolution settings ranging from 400 to 25,600 for flexible motor positioning.
- 18–50V DC Input: Compatible with properly rated DC power supplies and motion-control systems.
- Pulse/Direction Operation: Accepts pulse, direction, and enable signals from compatible machine controllers.
- Optically Isolated Inputs: Provides electrical isolation between the control-signal interface and driver circuitry.
- Selectable Idle Current: Supports automatic current reduction when the motor is stopped to help limit heat buildup.
- Built-In Protection: Manufacturer-documented protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and motor phase-to-phase short circuits.
- Integrated Heatsink: Aluminum housing helps dissipate heat during normal operation.

DIP Switch Configuration
The MB450A features eight DIP switches for configuring motor current, idle-current behavior, and pulse resolution.
- SW1–SW3: Select the motor output current using the peak and RMS current chart printed on the driver.
- SW4: Selects reduced or full idle-current operation. The OFF position enables automatic current reduction.
- SW5–SW8: Select the number of pulses required for one motor revolution.
When replacing an existing driver, record the original DIP switch settings before removal. Current and pulse-resolution settings must match the motor and machine controller requirements. Do not change DIP switches while power is connected.
Compatibility
This driver is intended for compatible two-phase bipolar stepper motors used in CO2 laser engraving and cutting machines, CNC equipment, and other motion-control applications.
Before ordering, compare your existing driver's model number, DC input voltage, peak and RMS motor-current ratings, pulse-resolution settings, control-signal requirements, terminal arrangement, and physical mounting dimensions.
Similar-looking stepper drivers are not always interchangeable. A replacement must meet the electrical and control requirements of the original system.
Installation & Setup
- Disconnect the machine from electrical power and allow stored energy to discharge before servicing.
- Photograph the original driver, wiring connections, and DIP switch positions before removal.
- Confirm DC input polarity, motor phase wiring, and control-signal connections before applying power.
- Configure the current and pulse-resolution settings according to the connected motor and controller.
- Mount the driver securely with adequate clearance around the heatsink.
- Never connect or disconnect motor wiring while the driver is powered.
- Test axis movement at a reduced speed before returning the machine to normal operation.
Troubleshooting
Common symptoms of motion-control problems include an axis that fails to move, motor vibration without rotation, irregular movement, missed steps, positioning errors, or an illuminated driver alarm.
These symptoms do not always indicate a failed driver. Loose wiring, incorrect settings, power-supply problems, motor faults, and mechanical binding may produce similar results.
Rabbit Laser USA can help you identify compatible replacement motor drivers and motion-control components for your CO2 laser machine. If you're unsure about compatibility, contact our technical support team with your machine model and photos of the original driver.
