How a Key Switch Works

A key-operated control switch changes the state of an electrical circuit when its key is turned to a selected position.

In a compatible laser machine, this type of switch may be used to enable or disable a control circuit, depending on the machine's electrical design.

Key switches are available with different electrical contact arrangements:

• Normally Open (NO): The contact remains open until the switch reaches its activating position.
• Normally Closed (NC): The contact remains closed until the switch reaches its activating position.
• Multiple Contact Blocks: Some assemblies operate more than one electrical circuit through the same key mechanism.

Some key switches maintain their selected position, while others return automatically when the key is released. Key-removal positions may also vary between models.
