Leadshine 3DM683 3-Phase Stepper Motor Driver
The Leadshine 3DM683 is a fully digital three-phase stepper motor driver designed for compatible CO2 laser engraving and cutting machines, CNC equipment, and industrial motion-control systems.
Operating on 20–60V DC, the 3DM683 uses digital signal processing (DSP) technology to provide controlled, repeatable motor movement. Its anti-resonance technology helps reduce vibration and improve motor performance, particularly at lower operating speeds.
Adjustable motor current, selectable microstepping resolutions, and automatic motor parameter setup allow the driver to be configured for a range of compatible three-phase stepper motors. Additional settings can be adjusted through Leadshine's supported ProTuner software and RS232 connection.

Motor Current Settings
The 3DM683 provides seven fixed motor-current settings through DIP switches SW1, SW2, and SW3. An additional default position enables software-controlled current adjustment.
| Peak | RMS | SW1 | SW2 | SW3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software | Default | OFF | OFF | OFF |
| 3.2A | 2.3A | ON | OFF | OFF |
| 4.0A | 2.9A | OFF | ON | OFF |
| 4.9A | 3.5A | ON | ON | OFF |
| 5.7A | 4.1A | OFF | OFF | ON |
| 6.4A | 4.6A | ON | OFF | ON |
| 7.3A | 5.2A | OFF | ON | ON |
| 8.3A | 5.9A | ON | ON | ON |
SW4 Standstill Current: OFF selects half current; ON selects full current, according to the switch label on the driver.
Select the motor-current setting based on the connected motor's electrical ratings and wiring arrangement. Excessive current may cause overheating, while insufficient current can result in missed steps or poor motor performance.
Microstepping Configuration
DIP switches SW5 through SW8 provide fifteen fixed pulse-resolution selections and one software-controlled configuration.
Fixed resolutions include 400, 800, 1,000, 1,600, 2,000, 3,200, 4,000, 5,000, 6,400, 8,000, 10,000, 12,800, 20,000, 25,000, and 25,600 pulses per revolution for the specified 1.2-degree motor configuration.
With compatible Leadshine ProTuner software and connection equipment, additional resolutions can be configured between 200 and 102,400 pulses per revolution.
Use the configuration chart printed on the driver when selecting DIP switch positions. Motor step angle and controller settings must be considered when calculating machine movement.
Compatibility
The Leadshine 3DM683 is intended for compatible three-phase stepper motor systems used in laser engraving and cutting machines, CNC equipment, X-Y motion stages, and other industrial motion-control applications.
Before ordering, compare the existing driver's model, input voltage, motor-current requirements, control-signal configuration, motor connections, DIP switch settings, and mounting dimensions.
Important: The 3DM683 is a three-phase motor driver and is not a direct replacement for a two-phase bipolar driver. Similar model names or matching connectors do not guarantee compatibility.
Installation & Setup
- Disconnect machine power and allow stored electrical energy to discharge before servicing.
- Photograph and label the original driver connections and DIP switch positions before removal.
- Verify the DC power supply voltage and polarity before connecting the replacement driver.
- Connect the compatible three-phase motor to the U, V, and W terminals according to its wiring documentation.
- Confirm the pulse, direction, and enable signal connections with the machine controller.
- Set motor current and microstepping resolution to match the motor and controller.
- Mount the driver securely with adequate ventilation around its heatsink.
- Never connect or disconnect motor wiring while the driver is powered.
- Test motor operation and axis movement at reduced speed before returning the machine to normal operation.
Troubleshooting
Common motion-control problems include an axis that fails to move, motor vibration without rotation, missed steps, inconsistent positioning, excessive motor heating, or an illuminated fault indicator.
These symptoms do not always indicate a failed driver. Incorrect settings, wiring faults, power-supply issues, mechanical binding, or an incompatible motor can cause similar problems.
Before replacing the driver, inspect the existing wiring, motor connections, power supply, and configuration settings.
