8mm Inductive Proximity Sensor – NPN NO, 2mm Detection, 2m Cable
This 8mm Inductive Proximity Sensor is a replacement position-detection sensor for compatible CO2 laser engraving and cutting machines. It detects nearby metal objects without requiring physical contact, making it useful for machine homing, axis positioning, and autofocus applications.
The sensor features an 8mm cylindrical metal barrel, a nominal 2mm detection distance, and a pre-attached 2-meter cable. Its threaded body and mounting nuts allow the sensing position to be adjusted during installation.
Operating on 10–24VDC, this sensor uses a normally open (NO), NPN sinking output to communicate with compatible machine controllers. When a suitable metal target enters the sensing range, the sensor activates its output signal.
Important: Confirm the sensor's voltage, output type, sensing distance, and physical dimensions before ordering. Similar-looking proximity sensors are not necessarily interchangeable.

How the Proximity Sensor Works
An inductive proximity sensor detects metal using an electromagnetic field generated near its sensing face.
When a suitable metal target approaches the sensor tip, it changes the electromagnetic field. The sensor detects this change and activates its electrical output.
Because the sensor does not require physical contact, it can detect machine position without the mechanical movement associated with traditional limit switches.
The nominal 2mm sensing distance is based on suitable metal targets. Actual detection distance varies with the target material, size, shape, orientation, and installation conditions.
Common Laser Machine Applications
In compatible laser engraving and cutting machines, this proximity sensor may be used for several positioning functions.
- Axis Homing: Detects a metal target at a designated reference position so the controller can establish an axis home location.
- Autofocus Positioning: Detects a reference point in compatible motorized focusing systems.
- Travel Position Detection: Provides a position signal to compatible machine control circuits.
- Industrial Automation: Detects metal objects in compatible automated positioning and control applications.
The sensor provides a detection signal only. The machine controller determines how that signal is used to control movement or other functions.
Understanding the NPN Normally Open Output
This sensor uses an NPN sinking-type output with a normally open switching arrangement.
When no suitable metal target is detected, the output transistor remains off. When a target enters the sensing range, the transistor activates and provides a current path toward ground.
A compatible controller input uses this change to identify when the sensor has been triggered.
Important: NPN and PNP sensors use different output arrangements. Normally open and normally closed sensors also behave differently. Verify both characteristics before replacing your original sensor.
Compatibility
This replacement sensor is intended for compatible laser machines and industrial control systems requiring an 8mm barrel inductive proximity sensor with a 2mm nominal sensing distance and normally open NPN output.
Before ordering, compare the replacement with your original sensor:
- Original sensor model number and markings
- 8mm barrel diameter and threaded length
- Sensor tip design and mounting requirements
- 2mm nominal sensing distance
- 10–24VDC operating voltage
- NPN sinking output configuration
- Normally open switching behavior
- Three-wire electrical connections
- 2-meter cable length and routing requirements
- Machine controller input requirements
Important: An 8mm barrel diameter alone does not confirm compatibility. Sensors with matching dimensions may have different electrical requirements or switching characteristics.
Do not substitute this sensor for a normally closed, PNP, or differently rated sensor without verifying that the machine's control system supports the replacement.
Installation & Safety
- Disconnect the laser machine from its electrical supply before replacing the sensor.
- Record the original sensor position, wiring, and mounting arrangement before removal.
- Verify the sensor's voltage requirements and wiring configuration before making electrical connections.
- Install the threaded barrel into a compatible mounting bracket and secure it using the mounting nuts.
- Adjust the sensor position to provide the required clearance from the metal detection target.
- Avoid excessive mechanical pressure on the sensor housing or plastic sensing tip.
- Route the cable away from moving components, sharp edges, and potential pinch points.
- After installation, verify that the sensor output changes correctly when the intended metal target approaches.
- Test the associated homing or positioning function according to the machine manufacturer's instructions before normal operation.
Safety Note: Incorrect wiring, sensor positioning, or controller configuration may cause failed homing, unexpected machine movement, or electrical damage. Never bypass a machine safety circuit to accommodate an incompatible sensor.
If the replacement sensor does not resolve the problem, inspect the power supply, wiring, target alignment, and controller input before continuing operation.
